John R. Mercell, Jesse Pinero

An all points bulletin has been issued by the Los Angeles Police Department for John R. Mercell, a schoolteacher (L),who disappeared with 10-year-old pupil Jesse Pinero, a student at St. Vincent's Catholic school. Mercell left behind a tape recording saying they were going to Canada to "start a new life," because the boy was not being properly raised. Mercell had for some time been a boarder at the home of the boys' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Moises Pinero.
