Infant mortality was widespread during the interwar period. Most children were dying at an early age, as is the case with the child in the picture. Photography during the excavations (June 29 - August 18, 1930) from Runcu, Gorj, village documented in 1486, located at the foothills of the Vâlcan Mountains in Sohodolului Gorge. Under the leadership of Professor Dimitrie Gusti (1880-1955, sociologist, academician, politician, initiator of the Sociological School from Bucharest) a team of 60 monographers has researched here methodically and analytically all the areas of his life - cosmological, biological, psychological, historical, economic, spiritual, politico-administrative. Following this campaign we defined the Romanian concepts about the theory and technique of sociological monography that were later known, appreciated and applied in European profile research.
