The Map Maker in A Changing World Chicago - It takes a full year for a girl to become proficient in mounting globes by hand. "Pat" Matalonis has been at it for 18 years. She soaks each of the 12 cut-out paper gores with paste. She then places them one at a time on the ball, rubbing each so as to stretch fully. The Trick is to get the first 11 gores so accurately placed that the 12th will exactly fit.
