Manhattan excavations

Near the intersection of Broadway and Madison Avenue, New York, an immense excavation has been made for the foundations of a new building; its walls are shored up, and a tall crane rises from a platform near the bottom of the pit. In states 2-5 there was a tramcar on Madison Avenue, close to the left side of the plate; this has been effaced. The other side of the tall upright member of the crane is also shaded. Long slanting rays of light appear on the house in Madison Avenue beyond the intersection of the other street. The bundle hanging from the slanting member of the crane (chain nets to go over dynamite charges in the excavation) is much shaded all over, and not very clearly detached at the lower end from the background of wall.
