William E. Story. (Bellows) / Emma Bellows' father and husband were opposite in temperament. The artist was volatile, opinionated, and quite casual about his appearance; Mr. Story, a dealer in fine linens and laces, was calm, conservative, and meticulous. Bellows drew this portrait with all due respect. Despite their differences, the two maintained a good relationship. (Mason)
