Mammoth Machinery Required in Building Boeing Stratojets 200-Ton Bertsch Bending Roll, originally designed for use in the ship-building industry, is just one of the heavy-type machines necessary in meeting production schedules of Boeing Airplane Company's Wichita, Kan., Division. The roll is used in contouring wing panels of 100-ton Stratojet B-47E medium bombers and RB-47E photo reconnaissance airplanes. An important milestone in Boeing's 38-year history came October 14 with the rollout at it's Wichita, Kan., Division of the 1,000th swept-wing B-47E bomber, marking the completion of 34 months of on-schedule operations. Both versions of the Stratojet -- the bomber and the reconnaissance airplane -- are powered by six General Electric J47 turbojet engines which develop 6,000 pounds thrust each.
