Balthazar was about to yield to the seductions of Fatima. Suddenly, he sees the sky, above the woody plateaus, turn aglow. He stands and stretches his hand out towards the horizon. His other hand stays holding Fatima's. Fatima, in profile, turns toward the right. She sits on a stone bench and lowers her head. Her left hand pulls her hair in a gesture of desperation.
