Machine Used to Preserve Heart--This is a 1968 photo of Dr. E.B. Diethrich and the machine used to keep a dead man's heart alive for 22 hours. The heart and lungs used in the experiment where those of John Hickey of Lawrence, Mass. Hickey had been flown to Houston after he suffered irreversible brain damage as a possible heart donor. The heart and lungs were placed in the portable chamber designed to permit quick transportation to any point in the world for possible transplant. by Associated Press
