Gallery›Digital Commonwealth — Boston Public Library›Lowell's Ryan Quits Ring Financial Dispute Cause. A financial dispute has caused Billy Ryan, 21-year- old Lowell light heavyweight, to retire from boxing. Ryan, one of the Promoter Sam Silverman's brighter proteges in winning 15 of 16 fights in this, his first year as a professional, said yesterday: "Silverman is the cause of the trouble. I've been thinking about it for three weeks, and I've decided to heck with it; I'm going to get a job and forget fighting. "I don't think anyone will change my mind." Ryan said. "I've had enough of fighting. I'll probably be better off if I go to work, or maybe use my GI bill to go to trade school. I'm not mad at my managers (Ted Coupe and ex-heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano). I just feel Silverman has been unfair in his business with me." Silverman denied Billy's allegation, saying, "if the kid isn't happy fighting, he's better off to quit now.".
