L. Sherman Adams, 71, of 105 Benvenue St., Wellesley, businessman, director of famed orchid grower, died yesterday at Clarney Hospital. He was a native of Lowell and was active until the time of his death in a multiplicity of fields, although he retired in 1948 as a director of the Massachusetts Investment Trust, of which he was one of the original incorporators. Adams was internationally known for his orchid growing, maintaining greenhouses in Wellesley and Framingham and at the same time was president of the Adams Machinery Co., Boston and a director of 20th Century Fox, the Brooklyn Union Gas Co. and the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Co. He was a former director of the American Orchid Society, a member of the Algonquin Club, Thursday Club, Brae Burn and Wellesley County clubs. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Helen (Hewett) Adams; a son. Lewis S. of Wellesley, three daughters, Mrs. James Stannard of Cohasset, Mrs. Donald Gates of Cambridge and Mrs. Charles Ireland of Birmingham, Ala., and 15 grandchildren. Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at St. Andres’s Episcopal Church, Wellesley.
