New Secretary of State. Dean Acheson, newly appointed Secretary of State, has had a long experience in Government service. Mr. Acheson first served the government as Under-Secretary of the Treasury in 1933, but resigned after six months. Eight years later he returned to the government as an Assistant Secretary of State. He remained in that office under Secretary James F. Byrnes and Secretary Marshall until July 1, 1947, when he resigned. This sketch of Dean Acheson was drawn by AP News-Features artist H.E. Munhall.
