Ladder Letter--PVT. Ray Sroka, Milwaukee, climbed a ladder to a barrack roof at Camp Carson, Colo., to read this letter from a girl friend, Dolores Heorst, also of Milwaukee. He complained that her letters weren't long enough, so she took a weekend to write him 25,000 words on a strip of paper 36 feet long. She attached candy bars to keep him from getting hungry while reading, feathers to ward off drowsiness and 1920 type pinup pictures so he wouldn't be distracted by feminine influences. The result was a half pound of mail which took Sroka, a member of company H, 196th infantry, two and a half hours to read.
