Indians Honor Saint in Colorful Ceremony. Blending Pagan and Cristian ceremonies, Papago Indians honored the memory of St. Francis Xavier at San Xavier Mission, near Tucson, Ariz., with a procession, a feast and dancing. The celebration of their Patron Saint's Day is the biggest event of the year for the peaceful tribesmen, and dates back to the mission's founding in 1692. Here is part of the procession, as vested Indian altar boys precede the catafalque bearing the statue of St. Francis, while Franciscan monks and a throng of Indians follow.
