Killer hurricane Cleo headed for the passage between Jamaica and Cuba 8/24, threatening the islands with gale winds and torrential rains. The Miami bureau said the hurricane would pass into open Caribbean waters later in the day, sparing a direct assault on either of the two islands. The storm killed 14 persons and left $63 million in damages on the French island of Guadeloupe 8/22.
