During the night of September 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key was detained on board an enemy ship from which he watch the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Baltimore's defense in the War of 1812. In the morning he was so delighted to see the stars and stripes still triumphant that he was inspired to write the beautiful poem "The Star Spangled Banner" which has since been adopted as our National Anthem.
