In the foreground, slanting from left to right, is an open roadway along the side of a canal, on which several barges and other boats are plying. Down the canal is a row of houses, partly veiled by trees, and interrupted by a massive octagonal tower with cupola and belfry; on the sides of the tower are inscribed the points of the compass. The foliage, measured at the same place, rises 3 mm. higher. The trees, here and just above the barge with three men at its stern, are considerably reworked. The gable is now shaded with a number of vertical lines close together. A deeper shadow falls on 2 windows, one over the other, partly hidden by trees, beginning 80 mm. from the right end of the plate.
