Hurricane Alma slashed into Cuba with 117-mph winds and then moved rapidly across the Florida Straits toward Key West 6/8. The National Hurricane Center reported that Alma could reach Key West by early afternoon. A 150-mile portion of Florida’s island chain, from Key Largo to Everglades City, was placed on emergency hurricane alert as the storm continued to move north.
