Hurricane Alma careened along the Florida gulf coast 6/9, aiming its peak winds at the Florida panhandle. Resort areas below Alma, including populous Tampa and St. Petersburg, were spared the brunt of the storm’s 100-mile-an-hour winds as it churned northward. The National Hurricane Center in Miami placed Alma’s center about 80 miles northwest of Tampa at 6 a.m. EDT.
