From an early drawing. -GB The scene is in the West Fifties where the artist lived from the time he came to New York in 1904 until 1910. The drawing was probably made during this period, and may be the one titled "A New York Street," published in "Harpers Weekly," September 6, 1913. [Bellows'] first lithograph, scavenger dogs looting the garbage, epitomizes the search for a native American tradition that characterized the Ashcan School as well as much of Bellows' own work.
