The two lovers, Dido and Aeneas, embrace. Mercury suddenly appears in a moonbeam, not far from a fluted column on which Aeneas's spear leans and supports his shield. He is seen from behind, flying in the air. His upper body is naked and his head is capped with the winged petasus. Approaching the column, he strikes his caduceus on the shield and repeats three times: Italy! He raises his right hand and seems to indicate his goal to Aeneas. (Berlioz, the Trojans, act II, scene 3)
