Howard Ellis, 64, a berserk mental patient was killed in his home today after shooting his wife, Janie, 64, and eight police officers in a bloody 2 1/2-hour battle. An armored car and submachine-guns were employed to bring down Ellis. The shooting began shortly after Ellis quarreled with his wife over his whipping one of the five welfare dept., children they care for. Photo shows police milling around the fortress home shortly after Ellis was felled by machine-gun bullets.
