How Man-Made Machine Would Do Work of Human Heart -- This is what will happen when the functions of the human heart are taken over by the artificial heart and lung machine described today before the Ohio chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians in Cleveland. Intended to perform work of both heart and lungs, the machine is designed to maintain normal circulation while detouring patient's blood around the heart. Black tubes are to carry dark, waste-laden blood to artificial lung; shaded tube is path of clear, refreshed blood to artificial patient's artery by the mechanical heart. The machine, used successfully on dogs, is at Hahnemann hospital, Philadelphia, for use on human patient, probably as a last desperate measure on someone whose heart stops during surgery. by Associated Press
