Near Inverlochy Castle in 1645 the Covenanters under Argyle were defeated by Montrose with a loss of 1500 men. Scott described the battle in the 'Legend of Montrose,' Neil Munro in 'John Splendid.' After shadow on water to extreme left is extended to 24 mm. from bottom of plate.
