Former Mayor Hugh J. Addonizio's (shown in a 1968 file photo) lawyer, Bernard Hellring, opened the defense case 6/9 in the trial Addonizio and four others on charges of extortion and conspiracy. Hellring said that a $4,000 kickback allegedly given to ex-mayor and related conversations reported by the prosecution "never took place." Addonizio was expected to be called as a witness 7/9.
