Melvin Whittum, 66, right, who spent 44 years at the Augusta, Me., State Hospital as a "forgotten man," was released from the institution yesterday. Among those who were on hand to help Whittum prepare for his re-entry into civilian life was Carrolle Ryer, left, a patient advocate who will work with Whittum in the months ahead.
