Augusta, Maine -- "Mel" Whittum, a forgotten man for 44 years on the maximum security ward at Augusta State hospital with patient advocate Carroll Ayer (left). The 21-year-old Ayer, an ex-Marine, pushed for Whittum's release after learning that no serious review had been made of his case, despite the fact his six-year prison sentence expired in 1930.
