Following in the Footsteps Thirteen years ago, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Southern Christian Leadership Conference began a bus boycott in Montgomery, Ala. Through the years that followed, SCLC president Martin Luther King, JR., followed the pathway of nonviolence in his drive for Negro equality. After his assassination recently, Ralph David Abernathy, his second-in-command, shown here with King at Jackson, Miss., in August, 1966, moved up to become the second president of the organization.
