Horses Break Perfectly From Magnetic Starting Gate. Santa Anita, Calif. -- Here is a back view of the new starting gate at the Santa Anita Park race track which will open its sixth winter season on Dec. 30th. It is designed to keep horses from backing out before the starting bell rings. A ten-inch belting operating on a roller is used. The new type barrier is operated by magnetic control and assures a perfect break when the race starts.
