Ex-Warden to Wed Walpole Secretary. The engagement of Walter R. Achuff, former Warden of the State Prison at Walpole, and his former secretary, Miss Joan Hamlin, 25, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Hamlin of Norfolk, was disclosed yesterday. The Hamlins confirmed last night that their daughter and the 43-year-old penologist planned to marry. They said no date for the wedding had been set, and that they expected to make a formal announcement later. Miss Hamlin, attractive, with green eyes and red hair, is secretary to Warden John A. Gavin, who succeeded Achuff as head of the prison after the Californian's resignation, early last month. Gavin describes her as "a fine girl and an excellent secretary; I can't speak too highly of her." Achuff, who served one year as head officer at Walpole, currently is classification officer at the Folsom Prison in California. His first wife, Mrs. Darlene Cradit Achuff, was killed July 13, when her car was struck by a train in Norfolk. They had no children.
