Dr. Mary L. Caldwell, professor emeritus of chemistry at Columbia University, holds up the American Chemical Society's Garvan Medal which was awarded to her at the society's convention here today. She is an authority on the bio-chemistry of sugars and starches. For the last six years Dr. Caldwell has been confined to a wheelchair because of a muscular ailment.
