Letters from Janice Cushing, right, of Wilmington, Del., to Andrew Kanik, left, and another Polish seaman, caused the two to flee from their ship when it docked in England. The 18-year-old college girl started writing to the two Poles after she had put an ad in a Polish language paper asking for a pen pal. Her letters about life in America and the American way of living decided Kanik and his friend to get out from behind the Iron Curtain. Their chance came when a ship on which they were training as fisherman docked in England.

Gay Head Cliffs and Historic Lighthouse. This is a panoramic view of the multi-colored Gay Head cliffs on Martha's Vineyard and the famous lighthouse (right) whose lens may soon be enshrined in the Museum of Science in Boston. The Gay Head Coast Guard station, whose members have aided in many heroic rescues, is at left. The cliffs are of clay in various shades from red and yellow to black and white. Devil's Bridge reef, scene of one of New England's most tragic shipwrecks, the city of Columbus disaster in which over 100 died in 1884, runs out from shore at left.
