Held in subway shooting of girl

William Combe, 23, is handcuffed as he arrives at police station from St. Clare's Hospital following shooting today of Diane Mercandetti, 18, at subway stairway on West 44th Street. Police said the girl, in serious condition at the hospital, identified Combe as her assailant. Combe, of Roselle Park, N.J., was described by police as a spurned suitor of Miss Mercandetti. With Combe is Detective Lester Stanton.
