He’s Happy American Citizen. San Francisco. Gin Nuey is happy. For a year he’s been under the threat of deportation because in 1893 he didn’t get his “chock chee” when the Chinese exclusion act was passed. The Chock Chee is the registration of those Chinese in this country prior to the act. “No sabe Chock Chee”, he declared to Immigration officials. But he finally won over their insistence he was an unregistered alien and subject to deportation although he’s been a resident of Stockton for forty years, and in this country for 76 of his 80 years. Bureaucracy gave way, however, and Gin Nuey is safe as an American citizen after yesterday’s hearing.
