'Grown' Diamonds, Graphite-ly Speaking--These diamonds of gem quality were created in a chemical nursery from graphite, the soft black substance used in lead pencils, General Electric scientists announced in New York Thursday. The larger crystals are approximately one carat in weight. Although these diamonds have undergone slight polishing, they have not been cut and retain the shape in which they were "grown" in a special apparatus for subjecting graphite (the pile of black powder) to extreme pressures and temperatures.
