The heavy demand for box lumber used in packaging shells and explosives, and the farmers' instability to transport logs over distances, have brought into being a number of portable sawmills throughout New England. A "Logs for Victory" campaign started the farmers off during the Winter "slack months" in the business of log-cutting. The logs were hauled over the snow and piled near the site of the mills. Came Spring -- the mill operators made collections and went to work.
