Lady of Panama in street costume, [1789-1794]

In short, two female figures are placed on a deep landscape: one in front of the spectator in the foreground and the other in second place. Both are dressed very similarly with long costumes, chosen and full of fliers, while they have very characteristic hairstyles formed from long braids. Performed during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. If this drawing is the work of the Italian painter Juan Ravenet, who has been attributed to it, it is undoubted that in order to do it he had to start from a previous work, since he joined the expedition after the arrival of this one to Mexico and never touched Panamanian lands again. In this sense a drawing (Inventory No. 02225) attributed to Felipe Bauzá as the direct precedent has been pointed out.
