New Haven, Conn: Yale scientists Elwyn L. Simons, (R) and David R. Pilbeam examine several jawbones in which they found indications that man's ancestral linage branched away from apes by about 14 million years ago, some six million years later than previously believed. The jawbone at left belongs to a near-man Australopithecus, at right that of a modern gorilla and in front fossilized fragments of pre-near-man Ramapithecus, about 8 to 15 million years old.
