The first production of “Peter Pan” starred the beloved Maude Adams, for whom Charles Frohman commissioned the play from its author. It premiered at the Empire Theatre, New York, on November 6, 1905. Ernest Lawford doubled as Hook and Darling, and Mildred Morris was Wendy. Although greeted lukewarmly by the critics of the time, the great faith of manager and star and word-of-mouth comment caused the boxoffice to build steadily until the play achieved a run of 237 performances that season. Although she acted other plays, Maude Adams returned constantly to the role of Peter, which she played either in New York or on tour every season from 1905 until early 1916. It was the greatest success of this popular actress’ career. Miss Adams, who is 77, emerged from retirement from the stage some years ago to take her present post of teacher of dramatics at Stephens College, Columbia, Mo.
