First girl at Maine Maritime Academy

Deborah Doane, 24, of Essex, Conn., yesterday became the first female student in the 30-year history of the Maine Maritime Academy at Castine. The University of Vermont graduate doesn't see her enrollment as the end of a tradition but as the beginning of a life-long plan to go to sea.
