Gen. Creighton W. Abrams Jr., is shown during news conference at the Pentagon 4/6, was assigned to Saigon as Chief Deputy to Commanding Gen. William C. Westmoreland. Abrams, reportedly in line to become the U.S. military chief in Vietnam, will succeed Lt. Gen. John Heintges who will become deputy U.S. commander in Europe. The White House, which made the announcement of the appointment, denied that Abrams new post was an automatic stepping stone to Westmoreland's.
