"Goon Gun" on Normandy Beachhead-Half an hour after landing on the coast of France, these members of a Chemical Warfare Battalion go into action with the 4.2 chemical mortar which fired 20 white phosphorous shells a minute at German positions a mile down the Cherbourg peninsula. Fuses for this weapon, dubbed the "goon gun" by doughboys, are manufactured and loaded by New England war workers.
