Gaslight Lamplighter Despite the advent of electrically lighted streets 50 years ago, Chicago still maintains 4,400 gas-burning and 260 gasoline street fixtures. Ernest Baggio, who came to the U.S. from Venice, Italy 23 years ago, has attended his particular set of gaslight fixtures since 1926. Here, Joe takes care of one of his lights. He is employed by a company which contracts for the service. The gaslights ignite automatically, but Joe and other employees of the company are required to inspect and to service them.
