Mammoth Press Brake Bends Cold Steel 1" Thick Weighs 72 Tons; Withstands 1,000 Ton Load A mammoth press brake, the largest machine of its type ever built for bending, forming, flanging and multiple punching of steel plate, has been completed and installed at the plant of the By-Products division of Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville, Pa. It can bend, cold, steel plate 1" in thickness in lengths up to 12-feet, and steel plate 34" in thickness in lengths up to 18-feet. It will permit economical production of bent shapes in the greater thicknesses and lengths required in present-day structural and plate fabrication, as well as for use in the welded steel structures now being widely employed by makers of machinery, engines and equipment. The press brake was designed and built by The Cincinnati Shaper Co., and is of all-steel construction, using heavy steel plate rolled especially for the machine by Lukens Steel Company. Housing were flame-cut from massive steel plates 8" thick, and weighs over 16-tons each. Bed and ram were flame-cut from steel plates 7" thick, and weigh more than 15-tons each. The complete machine weighs over 72 tons and can withstand working loads up to 1,000 tons.
