Hard Life of an Umpire–Umpire Ed Runge’s patience is wearing a bit thing as Boston Red Sox Jim Piersall disagrees with a decision in eight inning of twin bill opener at Yankee Stadium today. Boston third base coach Del Baker approaches at left. Piersall, on second with bases loaded, was charged with interference and called out when pitcher Ted Bowsfield hit a slow grounder to shortstop. BoSox claimed that Piersall had stopped in order to avoid being hit by ball and did not intentionally screen the shortstop, Tony Kubek. Red Sox won opener, 4-2 and Yankees won nightcap by same score.
