Wotan has advanced to the edge of a precipice. He is seen from the back, with his traveler's hat on his head and his great coat fluttering in the wind. His spear is on the ground beside him. In front of him, on the left, Erda rises from the abyss. She has one arm in the air, and the other, half folded, is over her head and supporting a long white veil. The sky is stormy.
