New Year's Eve. Columbus Circle, Fifty-Ninth Street, New York. An oil painting of this same subject was destroyed by the artist. Afterwards he regretted having done this and drew the lithograph. (Bellows) / This is one of the most atmospheric of Bellows' lithographs. An oil painting on the same subject had been destroyed in a fit of dissatisfaction years before. In the lithograph Bellows was successful in capturing the driving force of the snow and the self-protective movement of the scurrying New Yorkers at Columbus Circle on a New Year's Eve. (Mason)
