Handy Mechanic. A "mechanical hand", brain child of the age of automation, drops a car top into a conveyor after pulling it from a press at the Fisher Body stamping plant in Pittsburgh, Pa. The hand takes the place of men who formerly handled the heavy top. Since 1913, when the introduction of mechanical conveyor belt cut time for assembling one auto from 14 hours to 90 minutes, the mechanization process has been growing. Production, assembly and even painting now all include robot operations. The day when auto factories are run completely by pushbuttons is still in the future, but engineers are working on the remaining problems.
