Hands in the New Deal. Aggressive hands control the affairs of the War Department in the New Deal. Secretary of Was George H. Dern's hands (above), freckled, heavily veined, and with long knobby fingers, have been engaged in countless activities during a long and varied career. There's great strength in Dern's grip -- strength developed as a farm boy, as a youthful worker in a grain elevator and a lumber yard, as a football player in college, and, later, in the mining business when he often climbed ladders and sampled ore with a hammer.
