District attorney Cregg announced late today that the killer of Marie LaCombe, 14, high school girl, had been found dead, a suicide from gas poisoning, in a Salem rooming house less than a mile from the scene of the crime. Cregg identified the killer as Wilfred J. Marquis (closeup, above), formerly of Salem. Thus, Frank Szymanowicz, a 26-year-old hitch-hiker who had earlier confessed to the killing and then retracted the confession, was cleared
