Hand in the New Deal. The hands of Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes (pictured here), show the result of years of work in his own flower garden. He often is seen to hold his cigarette far down between his first and middle fingers, so that as he smokes his big-knuckles, sandy-haired, veined hand almost covers one side of his face. Ickes' hands are seldom still, though he doesn't often gesture. He clinks the change and keys in his pockets, strokes his chin and cheek, leans backward and puts his thumbs in his vest.
